The American Armed Forces is betting on green fuel

Tag(s): sustainable development, green fuel

Alternatives magazine n° 14, 2nd quarter 2007 Category: In brief

In the belief that the price of oil is going to remain high, the Pentagon has set up a major program to lower the military's fuel budget for road transport. Each extra dollar in the price of a barrel of crude oil, raises the Armed Forces' (Air Force, Navy, and Army) fuel expenditures by $130 million, with planes being the top gas guzzlers (73%). Natural resources will be making their contribution as the Armed Forces turns to synthetic fuels obtained from coal (the United States has considerable coal reserves) and to biofuels (organic matter used to produce road transport fuels). The goal has been set to start testing the first of the new motors by 2008. The US Air Force also estimates that by 2016, half of the 800 million liters of road transport fuel it consumes will come from synthetic fuels and green gas.
