China wants to prove that a sustainable urban lifestyle is not incompatible with economic growth. In partnership with British engineering firm Arup, Shanghai Industrial Development Corp. has decided to transform Shanghai’s Dongtan suburb into a model “eco-urban” showcase. Located on an island in an estuary of the Yang-Tseu-Kiang River, Dongtan will be totally “carbon neutral” and self-sufficient for both food and energy. The town will produce wind and solar energy, the public transportation systems will use mainly hybrid vehicles, and employment will be geared towards technologies that are both clean and on the cutting edge. Only organic farming will be allowed in the area. Every aspect of the project will be planned in detail, including access to the river banks and the orientation of houses to the sun. Some 50,000 people are expected to live in Dongtan by the time Shanghai hosts the 2010 Universal Exhibition. The new city should have 500,000 inhabitants by 2040.
